The piston on my brake caliper is stuck in the out position and impossible to compress.?

It is wedged up against the rotor and will not compress back into the cylinder even when prying a screwdriver in between and opening the bleeder valve. If I remove the caliper is it safe to vise the piston back in? Have I done permanent damage by extending the piston too far out? Please help.
